Gray (Horace) is born in Boston.

Horace Gray graduates from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, begins to practice law and lives at 79 Mount Vernon Street. He serves on the Supreme Judicial Court (1864-82), the last 10 years as chief justice, then on the Supreme Court (1882-1902), where he is the first to employ law clerks, including Louis Brandeis. Gray dies in Washington, D.C. on September 15, 1902.
